Health Insurance
Specialist (HIS)
Health Insurance specialists work in doctor’s offices or medical
clinics. They have a variety of duties and are trained in many medical
office functions. Some of the duties of the HIS professional are as
follows:
-Reviews patient record
to document all diagnosis, procedures, and services.
-Apply knowledge of health insurance rules and regulations.
-May handle some office bookkeeping.
-Prepare and review claims.
-Correct all data and errors.
-Research and prepare appeals for all underpaid claims.
-Inform staff of any changes of laws regarding abuse and/or fraud.
-Update patient forms.
-Maintain internal audit system- making sure authorizations have been
entered properly.
-Explain insurance and filing policies, rules, and procedures to patients.
